Academia-Industry Collaboration in India: Why It's Broken and What's Changing

India produces an enormous volume of academic research and graduates an enormous number of technically capable students every year. And yet industry regularly complains it can't find “job-ready” talent, while researchers regularly complain their work never reaches anyone who could actually use it. Both complaints are true at the same time, which tells you the problem isn't volume — it's the connective tissue between the two sides.
The Gap Nobody Talks About
Academia and industry in India largely operate as two separate ecosystems that occasionally intersect through formal, slow-moving channels — MoUs, placement cells, the odd guest lecture. Ecosystems with tighter academia-industry links tend to share one feature: low-friction, informal ways for people on both sides to discover each other's work before any formal process begins — open lab pages, industry-sponsored problem boards, researchers who post early-stage work publicly and get approached because of it. The formal mechanisms (grants, MoUs, tech-transfer offices) still matter, but they sit on top of a much broader, everyday layer of visibility that India's ecosystem mostly lacks.

The fix isn't necessarily more formal partnerships — India already has plenty of MoUs that go nowhere. It's a shared, everyday space where students, researchers, faculty, institutions and industry can see each other's actual work, post open problems, and connect directly, without needing an existing personal relationship to make the first move.
